Week 8 Easily confused words

Mr Brown: What do you want to be when you grow up, Tina and Bob?
Tina: I like drawing. I want to be a drawer when I grow up.
Mr Brown: Err ...?
Bob: I want to be a cooker. I love food and I like cooking.
Mr Brown: Huh ... ?

Tips!

Easily confused nouns (名詞):
Some nouns in English can be formed by adding '-er' to the verb (動詞). They usually refer to the person who performs the action.

  teach → teacher dance → dancer

However, this is not always the case:
  drawer = 抽屜 ≠ a person who draws (an artist)
  cooker = 電飯煲 ≠ a person who cooks (a cook / chef)

Easily confused adjectives (形容詞):
fun / funny
  This game is fun. (I enjoy the game.)
  This show is funny. (The show makes me laugh.)

-ing / -ed adjectives
  The book is boring. →   I am bored. (I fall asleep when reading it.)
  The lion is frightening. →   I am frightened. (I am shaking.)

Easily confused verbs (動詞):
borrow / lend (借)
  I borrowed some books from the library.
  My friend lent me $10 because I have lost my purse.

sit / take or go by (坐)
  I sat on a bench in the park.
  I took the MTR to get to school.
  I went home by tram.
