Week 3 'Be' and 'do'

Bob: Hi, Tina. Why do you so happy?
Tina: Look! Mr Brown gave me a big robot.
Bob: Oh, I love robots. Are you like robots, Mr Brown?
Mr Brown: Err? I think you mean 'Do I like robots'. Well, yes, I do.

Tips!

It is easy to mix up 'be' and 'do' in questions. Here are two simple rules for you to follow:

1. Be

Remember to use 'be', NOT 'do' in questions with adjectives (形容詞).

Wrong questions

Correct questions

You afraid? / Do you afraid?

Are you afraid?

Why you so happy? / Why do you so happy?
Why are you so happy?

2. Do

When the main verb (動詞) in the question is not 'be', we use 'do/does' in the present tense and 'did' in the past tense.

Examples:

Are you hungry? main verb = are (be)
Were you tired? main verb = were (be)
Do you help at home? main verb = help
Does she have a dog? main verb = have
Did he watch the film? main verb = watch

You can also use these rules for negative sentences (否定句子).

Examples:

I am not hungry.
  We are not tired.
I do not help at home.
She does not have a dog.
He did not watch the film.
