Week 2 The useful linking verb 'be'

Mum: Happy birthday, Tina! Here's a present for you.
Tina: What is it?
Mum: Take a look.
Tina: Oh, a puppy! It very cute! I very happy. Thank you very much, Mum!

Do you remember we talked about the problem of Chinglish (中式英語) last week? This time, Tina makes the same type of mistake again. She says: 'I very happy' because this is how she would say it in Chinese: 我很開心.

In English we need to use the verb 'be' to link the subject (主詞) with the adjective
(形容詞) in a sentence:

Correct sentences

It very cute.

牠很可愛。

It is very cute.

I very happy. 我很開心。
I am very happy.

Remember to use the correct form of 'be':

  Present tense 現在式 Past tense 過去式
  I am angry. I was angry.
  He/She/It is naughty. He/She/It was naughty.
  You/We/They are helpful. You/We/They were helpful.
